The Importance of Product Registration Cards By Levine & Slavit PLLC on September 30, 2016

September is Baby Safety Month and this year’s theme, “Baby Safety Right Out of the Box,” focuses on the importance of product registration cards and product recalls. The theme is designed to educate parents and caregivers on the importance of filling out the registration cards included with most baby and toddler products. For many parents, it can be overwhelming to think about registering the seemingly endless amount of baby gear. However, this is a good way to stay informed about recent product recalls and to ensure that these products for the baby are safe.

Product registration cards are small, paid-postage cards that are packaged with every durable product made for infants and toddlers after June 2010. Parents should fill out the contact information on the card to establish a direct line of communication with the product’s manufacturer. Individuals have the alternative option to visit the manufacturer’s website and complete the product registration form online. Manufacturers are required to keep this information stored in their database for a minimum of six years after the manufacturing date. Should an issue arise with a product, such as a recall, the manufacturer can easily contact the consumer directly to provide information about returning the potentially unsafe or defective product for a refund or exchange. This information provided on the product registration card is not used for marketing or sales purposes, and is only for necessary safety alerts.

Registering a baby product may ensure the safety of the child’s life. Oftentimes, consumers may be unaware a product has been recalled if they fail to fill out the product registration form. In some instances, babies and toddlers have been injured, and, in severe circumstances, have died, due to use of defective or dangerous products. The ultimate purpose of registering products is to help individuals stay as informed as possible. By making sure customers stay informed, manufacturers can do their part in ensuring that the child for whom the product was intended is protected, thereby alleviating any worries that the parents may have. The registration card process ultimately benefits everyone, from the parent to the manufacturer.

If your child has suffered a serious injury as a result of a defective or dangerous manufactured product, you may be entitled to compensation. The New York dangerous children’s products lawyers at Levine & Slavit, PLLC are committed to child safety and will vigorously fight to protect your and your loved one’s rights.
