Pediatricians Urge The Extension of Choking Prevention Strategies from Toys to Food

When considering the risk of young children choking, thoughts tend to center more upon toys than upon food. But that can cause the risk of choking on food to be overlooked. Statistics currently on the website of the Centers for Disease Control state that in 2000, 160 children ages 14 years or younger died from an obstruction of the respiratory tract due to inhaled or ingested foreign bodies. Of these, 41% were caused by food items and 59% by nonfood objects. The Suffolk Legislature voted on October 13, 2009, to ban the sale of drop-side cribs, potentiallyvirtual death traps to infants. Drop-side cribs have caused many deaths and injuries, and prompted massive recalls. It is the first such restriction in the nation. The problem with drop-side cribs is that they have more moving parts than cribs with four fixed sides, making them more likely to develop gaps where a child can become trapped and be asphyxiated. The safer style are drop-gate cribs with four immobile sides - including those that have a small six-inch section at the top of one side that can fold down for greater access without endangering the infant. Its been a tough couple of days for the safety of infants and toddlers. On July 7, 2009, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in cooperation with Gromex Inc., of Passaic, N.J., announced a voluntary recall of about 700 Jaloma Pacifiers. The next day the CPSC, in cooperation with Kolcraft Enterprises Inc. of Chicago, Ill., announced a voluntary recall of about 1 million Kolcraft, Carters, Sesame Street, Jeep, Contours, Care Bear and Eric Carle Play Yards. The recalledpacifier has a ring-shaped handle and a round-shaped mouth guard with two ventilation holes. Jaloma is printed on the handle side of the mouth guard and the nipple has a gel-like liquid inside. The problem is that the pacifier mouth guard and the ventilation holes are too small and fail to meet federal safety standards.
