This week, October 18 – 26, is National Teen Driver Safety Week, which was established by Congress in 2007 after a series of tragic motor vehicle accidents involving Pennsylvania high school students. As part of the event, State Farm sponsors a competition called “Celebrate My Drive,” where teens are encouraged to practice safe habits on the roadways. All residents, whether they have a driver’s license or not, are encouraged to log on to the site, www.celebratemydrive.com, and make a commitment to safe driving. The more commitments in a particular school’s name, the better that school’s chances for winning cash prizes.
The two high schools in the country with the most commitments to safe driving will win a private concert from Kelly Clarkson. The ten highest scores nationwide will receive $100,000 grants from State Farm. The school districts with the next 90 highest scores win $25,000.00.
Ten percent of the grant check awarded must be spent in support of a teen driver safety program to benefit the students; the other 90 percent can be spent on school-related needs defined by the winning school and approved by State Farm.
The competition works as follows: Participants go to www.celebratemydrive.com and will see a link that reads, “Make your commitment now.” They will then be asked to fill out personal and school information, take a short quiz and check a box stating they commit to these safe driving tips.
The winners will be announced on December 9, 2013. Kelly Clarkson’s concert will be in the Spring of 2014.
Motor vehicle crashes remain the primary cause of death for adolescents. Teen drivers (ages 16 to 19) are involved in fatal crashes at four times the rate of adult drivers (ages 25 to 69). Each year, more than 5,000 teens are killed in motor vehicle crashes.
