Invokana’s Side Effects Put Users at Risk

Recently, an Illinois couple filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court of New Jersey, Trenton Division against Jassen Pharmaceuticals and its parent company, Johnson & Johnson, claiming that the use of Invokana caused a stroke. According to Invokana, the medication (Canagliflozin), when used along with diet and exercise, is proven to significantly lower blood sugar (A1C) in adults with type 2 diabetes. Since the launch of the treatment, many Invokana lawsuits have been filed, citing dangerous side effects, including diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), heart problems, kidney damage, kidney stones, urinary tract infections, stroke, coma and death. Those who have filed suits allege that the manufacturers failed to provide adequate warning about the drug’s dangerous side effects and failed to perform proper clinical trials on the medication before hitting the market.

The plaintiff in this recent case started taking Invokana for treatment for her diabetes. She began taking the drug as directed in October 2015 and, within a few weeks, suffered a stroke. As stated in the plaintiff’s complaint, the defendant allegedly had knowledge of the increased risk of severe injury among Invokana users and failed to notify the public. Had the plaintiff known the risks of the medication, she would not have not used Invokana and would have opted for a safer treatment option.

Last month, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released information regarding the results of an ongoing clinical trial that found an increased risk of leg and foot amputations, mostly affecting the toes, in those treated with Canagliflozin (Invokana). The FDA advises patients taking Invokana to notify their health care professional immediately if they observe new pain or tenderness, sores or ulcers, or infections in their legs or feet.
