Slip and Falls Named One of the Top Contributor to Workplace Fatality

In 1992 the first workplace fatalities census was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) to provide insight into insight into the safety of workplaces in America and reveal professions of people most at risk for fatal workplace injuries. Although the census revealed a steady, downward trend in on-the-job fatalities since the 1990s, the the annual total of fatal workplace injuries in 2015 was the highest number reported since 2008. General Contractor Subject to Pay Fine in Avoidable Death of Worker

In April 2015, 22-year-old Carlos Moncayo was killed when a 14-foot deep, unshored trench collapsed. Mr. Moncayo was an undocumented laborer from Ecuador who worked for Sky Materials, which is an excavation subcontractor based in Calverton, Long Island, New York. Alfonso Prestia, the site supervisor plead guilty to criminally negligent homicide and was sentenced to serve community service. The foreman of Sky Materials was convicted of criminally negligent homicide and was sentenced to a year in jail. The company Sky Materials, has yet to be tried.

Single-Engine Plane Crashes in New York Residential Neighborhood

On April 10, 2016 a small Piper 28 plane crashed in a residential neighborhood on Long Island, injuring both the pilot and passenger. The plane was heading to Upstate New York from the Bayport Aerodrome, and hit the tops of trees and utility lines, causing the crash to occur.

The plane reportedly contained a single engine which had some sort of failure. Luckily the plane crashed onto an intersection of two streets in a residential area, instead of crashing into a home or other structure in the neighborhood.
