OSHA And Skanska-Walsh Form Partnership To Eliminate Workplace Hazards

Recently, OSHA signed an agreement with Skanska USA and Walsh Construction (Skanska-Walsh) to protect the health and safety of the 1,600 construction workers hired to work on the redevelopment project of LaGuardia Airport Central Terminal Building.  Skanska-Walsh is in charge of the $4 billion project. As an additional safety measure, Skanska USA has also signed a contract with the Building and Construction Trades Council to manage all of the construction zones.

According to Skanska-Walsh, safety has always been a major concern during this project. Out of 1,600 workers that are part of the redevelopment project, 1,200 are construction workers.  The remaining workers are involved in areas such as design or finance, among others. According to a New York Daily News article, all workers hired by Skanska USA for the redevelopment project are unionized workers. This was meant to further increase safety because workers will have been union trained on the most recent safety standards and practices.

According to OSHA the agreement will help eliminate workplace hazards as well as ensure compliance with health and safety regulations. According to OSHA, this partnership agreement includes private establishments, federal officials, and labor unions.  These individuals will provide training on workplace safety during the length of the project. Furthermore, representatives from OSHA will take part in all aspects of the project such as sitting in on meetings, assisting with trainings, and regularly inspecting the construction sites, among other things.

The partnership between Skanska-Walsh and OSHA will also provide a foundation for proper health and safety in the workplace for more than 250 subcontractors whose employees do not usually receive proper training. According to a press release, the LaGuardia Airport Central Terminal Building project is scheduled to be completed by 2022. While many are hopeful that construction accidents will be eliminated through this partnership, construction sites are still one of the most hazardous work environments with a fatality rate of 26.8 deaths per 100,000 workers.
