Newsday reported that Long Island saw fewer fatalities on the road last year than in the previous year. Safer cars, red-light cameras, increased traffic patrols and motorists better educating themselves on driver safety were cited for the reduction.
Data from the Institute for Traffic Safety Management and Research (ITSMR), in conjunction with the Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy at the University of Albany, showed that, on Long Island, 171 people died in 160 crashes in 2017, which is 21.6% lower than when 218 people were killed in 194 crashes in 2016. Broken down by county, Suffolk’s traffic death rate dropped 28.1% from 139 people in 121 crashes in 2016 to 100 people in 94 crashes last year. Nassau County saw a decrease of approximately 9%, with 71 fatalities in 66 crashes in 2017, compared to 79 deaths in 73 crashes two years ago.
Nationwide, there also seems to be a trend of fewer deaths on the road. The National Safety Council recorded 18,680 fatalities within the first half of 2017. At this rate, the number of fatalities in 2017 should be lower than that of 2016, with 40,200 deaths.
However, the article states that, despite the decrease in traffic deaths, there is a growing concern over drivers using their cell phones to text while driving. According to the most recent ITSMR data, in 2016, drivers in Suffolk received 4,310 tickets for texting while driving, while Nassau drivers were issued 2,223 tickets. Law enforcement officials believe educating motorists on the dangers of texting while behind the wheel will discourage them from committing this infraction.
