Long Island is home to a long stretch of beautiful beaches, boardwalks, and parks. Moving away from these quaint characteristics of our Island, you’ll find the harsh truth of our significantly dangerous roads. The ugly truth has been revealed in a study released in 2016 by the Tri-State Transportation Campaign (TSTC). The publication categorizes fatalities by year, from 2012 to 2014, and by county. It is no surprise that both Nassau and Suffolk counties are among the most dangerous counties in the state for pedestrians.
The TSTC named Hempstead Turnpike as Nassau County’s most dangerous road for walking. According to the study, there was a total of 94 fatalities in Nassau County alone from 2012 to 2014 and twelve of those fatalities occurred on Hempstead Turnpike (SR-24). The runner-up to Hempstead Turnpike was Sunrise Highway (SR-27), with seven fatalities.
Further east in Suffolk County, the results were similar. According to the study, there was a total of 116 pedestrian deaths from 2012 to 2014 in Suffolk County. During this time-period, twelve of those fatalities occurred on Middle Country Road (SR-25). Main Street (SR-25A), New York Avenue (SR-110), and Sunrise Highway (SR-27) were tied for second as the most dangerous with eight fatalities each.
With increased congestion and greater emphasis being placed on walkable communities, the problem of pedestrian accidents has grown on Long Island. Also, pedestrians are being less mindful of their surroundings due to the increased dependency on mobile devices, which divert the user’s attention from hazards. It is important to be aware of your surroundings and to be alert when traveling, either by vehicle or on foot.
