New York City Regions Most Dangerous Roads - 2006 to 2008 By on January 07, 2010

The Tri-State Transportation Campaign yesterday released a report identifying the tri-state regions most dangerous roads for pedestrians. Topping the list is Hempstead Turnpike in Nassau County. Between 2006 and 2008, 13 pedestrians were killed along the 16-mile stretch of roadway, with most of those fatalities occurring as the road passes through Elmont, Franklin Square and Hempstead. You might want to make a comparison to the 2005-2007 statistics we wrote about previously. The analysis found the regions most dangerous roads for walking over the three-year (2006-2008)period were: RankRoadwayPedestrian Fatalities 1Hempstead Turnpike (Route 24), Nassau County, NY13 2Sunrise Highway (Route 27/39), Suffolk County, NY11 3 Burlington Pike (US-130), Burlington County, NJ9 3 Atlantic Ave, Brooklyn9 3 3rd Ave, Manhattan9 3Middle Country Rd (SR-25), Suffolk County, NY 9 7Broadway, Manhattan8 8White Horse Pike (Route 30), Atlantic County, NJ7 8 Route 1, Middlesex County, NJ 7 8 Route 549, Ocean County, NJ7 8Route 9, Ocean County, NJ7 8Route 1, Union County, NJ7 8 Kings Highway, Brooklyn7 8 Merrick Rd, Nassau County, NY7 8 7th Ave, Manhattan7 8 Hylan Blvd, Staten Island7 The report is based upon recently released data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administrations Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) to determine which routes within each county had the highest number of pedestrian fatalities over the three-year period from 2006 to 2008. The analysis excludes Interstates and other roads where pedestrians are prohibited. Several efforts are already underway to improve safety in many of these corridors, such as the Safe Routes to Transit and Safe Routes for Seniors programs implemented by the New York City Department of Transportation and aimed at reducing pedestrian injuries and fatalities at targeted locations. The New York State Department of Transportation introduced a SafeSeniors pilot program to improve pedestrian safety on roads that are particularly dangerous for Long Islands seniors.
