FDA Announces Recall of 359 Million Abbott Glucose Test Strips By SEO Admin on December 25, 2010

The recall applies to 359 different lots (as many as 359 million strips) of glucose test strips marketed under the following brand names: Precision Xceed Pro, Precision Xtra, Medisense Optium, Optium, OptiumEZ, and ReliOn Ultima. These strips are used with Abbotts blood glucose monitoring systems. The test strips being recalled may give falsely low blood glucose results. False results may lead patients to try to raise their blood glucose unnecessarily, or they may fail to treat elevated blood glucose because of a false, low reading. Both scenarios pose risks to a patients health.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommends that special attention be paid to signs and symptoms of high blood sugar (hyperglycemia) and low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).

-Symptoms of high blood sugar include excessive thirst, excessive urination, blurred vision, weakness, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. -Symptoms of low blood sugar may include trembling, excessive sweating, weakness, hunger, confusion, and headache. Some individuals may have no symptoms at all before they develop unconsciousness or seizures. It is important to treat low blood sugars promptly to avoid loss of consciousness or a seizure.

The FDA website has a FAQ-type page setting forth information such as ways to determine if a product is being recalled, makes suggestions as to how to continue to test your blood sugar until non-defective glucose test strips can be obtained, and how to proceed if you have no alternative to using a defective strip.

Earlier this year 14,000 packages of OneTouch SureStep diabetes test strips were recalled. That amounts to 6 lots a pittance compared to the 359 million involved in Abbotts recall.
