Devastating Brain Injuries: Type of Head Injury By on May 31, 2014

An illustration of the brainThe brain plays a significant role in our bodies, controlling everything from movement, to memory, to creativity. There are many types of brain injuries that can negatively impact some or all of these functions. Just as there are multiple types of brain injuries, there are also different degrees of injury. Each brain injury is unique in the type of force that is applied, the amount of force that the brain is exposed to, and the affects the injury has on the body. At Levine and Slavit, PLLC, our car accident attorneys ensure that clients receive comprehensive legal counsel when these types of injuries occur. Our Long Island brain injury attorneys understand the effects of these traumatic injuries and work hard to obtain fair and just compensation for our clients.

Types of Brain Injuries

Traumatic brain injuries are sudden injuries that occur when a significant amount of force is placed on the brain. These injuries are sudden and are often the result of falls, work injuries, automobile accidents, or physical assault. When any of these instances occur, the brain can suffer from any number of physical injuries. Some common types of brain injuries include the following:

  • Concussion :A concussion occurs when the brain receives trauma from an impact or is jostled by sudden movement. This is the most common type of brain injury and although many consider this a mild injury, it can have significant and long-lasting effects. A concussion may involve loss of consciousness, confusion or dizziness, and brain swelling or bleeding. All concussions should be taken seriously and examined by a doctor.
  • Contusion: A contusion describes a bruise, or bleeding, on the brain. This type of injury may result from a direct blow to the head. It is also possible for a contusion to occur on two sides of the brain. If the impact is significant enough, a contusion may develop on the side of impact as well as on the opposite side of the brain. In severe cases, a contusion may require surgical treatment.
  • Diffuse axonal: This injury occurs when the head is moved or shaken rapidly. The brain is slower to move than the skull and this can cause the nerve tissues throughout the brain to tear.
  • Penetration: Penetration is an injury in which a foreign object is inserted into the brain. Although this is most common in attacks (from objects such as knives and bullets), penetration may also occur during an automobile accident.

In addition to these traumatic brain injuries, injuries may also occur if the brain is denied oxygen due to a loss of consciousness. Any type of brain injury may affect the functions of the brain including attention, memory, flexibility, creativity, and more.

Legal Options

When a brain injury has occurred, our attorneys can examine the case to determine where the culpability falls. Brain injuries can incur many damages such as medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering, all of which may be obtained from the responsible party in a legal hearing. As automobile accidents are one of the leading causes of brain injury, our car accident attorneys can create a solid case to determine faultin these situations so that our clients are not left to suffer any additional burdens of a brain injury.
