Toy Safety for Children During the Holidays By Levine & Slavit PLLC on December 22, 2015

In addition, defective toys present inherent hazards to children of all ages.  While younger children may be more prone to choking on small items, older children are more prone to taking risks and misusing toys in what can sometimes be a dangerous manner.  A defective toy can increase those risks as well as present others.

From 2012 to 2013, the number of recalls related to children’s products increased by 18%.  It is important to be aware of any product recalls that can arise during the holiday season and year round.  This means keeping an eye out on websites such as the Consumer Product Safety Commission, or even social media.  Many times people are unaware of recalls, which can result in preventable injury.  In 2012, there were 584 incidents and 39 injuries from recalled toys even after the recall was issued due to unawareness.  In addition, it is not only toys that can cause injury to children.  Other products such as clothing, cribs, medication, etc. all can pose a risk when they are defective.

Some safety tips for purchasing toys this holiday season:

·         Keep an eye out for any recalls

·         Research the toy before purchasing

·         Always supervise your child when they are using a toy

·         Purchase age appropriate toys for children

·         Avoid toys with sharp objects and toys that have parts that can be pulled off

If your child has been injured by a defective toy or product, you may be entitled to compensation.  Contact an experienced personal injury attorney who can advise you of your legal rights.  The Law Offices of Levine & Slavit represent clients in defective children’s toy cases and will fight for your right to compensation.  Contact (888) LAW-8088 for a consultation today.
