Single-Engine Plane Crashes in New York Residential Neighborhood By on January 05, 2017

On April 10, 2016 a small Piper 28 plane crashed in a residential neighborhood on Long Island, injuring both the pilot and passenger. The plane was heading to Upstate New York from the Bayport Aerodrome, and hit the tops of trees and utility lines, causing the crash to occur.

The plane reportedly contained a single engine which had some sort of failure. Luckily the plane crashed onto an intersection of two streets in a residential area, instead of crashing into a home or other structure in the neighborhood. Unfortunately, the pilot suffered serious injuries including two broken legs and a head injury. The passenger suffered minor injuries. The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the incident.

Notably, small planes can be more dangerous than larger commercial planes. For one, small aircraft typically fly without the aid of Air Traffic Control. The local airports where small aircrafts take off and land generally do not have control towers. Another difference is that small planes are not equipped with the same safety mechanisms, such as oxygen masks or advanced pressure systems. When flying a small plane, a pilot must be aware of these risk factors and take extra precautions.

Serious injuries can result from small plane accidents. If you or a loved one has suffered serious injuries as a result of an aircraft accident, it is important to contact a personal injury attorney immediately to discuss your legal rights and remedies. Levine & Slavit, PLLC represents clients in pursuing claims arising out of another’s negligence and will fight for your right to receive compensation.
