Truck Accidents on the Rise Across the U.S. in 2021
According to statistics released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Council (NHTSC), the rate of truck accidents increased by 26% between 2020 and 2021. This dramatic increase in accidents also came with increased fatalities, which went up by about 17% during the same period. This has been blamed on a number of factors, including increased risk of distraction and impairment for truck drivers.
Truck Accidents Up in 2021
According to the NHTSC, the number of truck accidents increased from 415,444 in 2020 to 523,796 in 2021, an approximately 26% increase over the course of one year. At the same time, the number of truck accident fatalities increased from 4,945 in 2020 to 5788 in 2021, about a 17% increase. Though only about 1% of truck accidents involved fatalities, there were still many more that resulted in non-fatal injuries.
Causes of Truck Accidents
A few causes of truck accidents stick out as reasons for injuries and deaths. First and foremost, the NHTSC attributes the high number of truck accidents to driver exhaustion and distraction, which were cited as the top reason for these accidents. In addition, about 13% of truck accidents occurred as a result of icy roads or other inclement weather, and a disproportionate number of accidents occurred at night. Speeding was also cited as a factor in around 7% of accidents.
Where Truck Accidents Were Most Common
In terms of the frequency of truck accidents, the states of Texas, California, Florida, Georgia, and Illinois saw the highest number of accidents. Meanwhile Washington DC, Vermont, Hawaii, Rhode Island, and Alaska saw the lowest numbers of accidents. Rural areas, in particular, turned out to be especially deadly, with 55% of all fatal truck accidents occurring on country roads.
