Survey Finds LI Auto Accident Fatalities Up Since 2019
A recent analysis conducted by Newsday found that fatalities from auto accidents were up across Long Island since 2019. A total of 243 people were killed in auto accidents across the Island in 2022, up about 29% from just three years earlier. This dramatic increase in auto accident fatalities is attributed to an increase in reckless driving habits, as well as more lax enforcement from traffic cops.
Auto Accident Fatalities Increased Since 2019
The number of people killed across Long Island increased by 29% between 2019 and 2022, according to Newsday. This included a 20% increase in the number of pedestrian fatalities during the same period. Unfortunately, there is no sign that this trend is stopping, with the number of traffic fatalities up about 22% this past August compared to the same time last year.
Increase in Reckless Driving
One of the biggest contributors to this increase in auto accident fatalities is a commensurate increase in reckless driving behaviors by drivers. Police reports have indicated an increase in speeding, illegal lane changes, driving without a seatbelt, and distracted driving during that time. The number of people driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, also known as a DUI, also increased significantly.
Concerns About Traffic Enforcement
There are also some concerns that police may have become too lax with traffic enforcement. The police relaxed their enforcement of traffic laws during the COVID-19 pandemic, which some drivers took as license to ignore traffic safety altogether. Now, the police are struggling to enforce traffic laws once more, even as violations remain a frequent problem.
Addressing the Problem
Some suggestions have been put forward to reduce the number of auto accident fatalities. Among these include more frequent enforcement of traffic laws, and harsher penalties for violators. There are also suggestions of increasing education for drivers to encourage them to drive safely, and to discourage reckless driving habits like speeding or texting and driving. This way, people can reduce the risk that they will get into an otherwise avoidable accident.
