Sofia Produce Recalls Cantaloupes Due to Salmonella Contamination
Sofia Produce, LLC, an Arizona-based agricultural producer, has issued a recall for all cantaloupes sold between October 10 and November 3, 2023, after it was found they may be contaminated with salmonella. The recall affects fruit sold across 32 states, including New York, and has resulted in at least two deaths. Anyone who has one of the affected cantaloupes should be thrown out or returned.
What is Sofia Produce?
Sofia Produce, LLC, is a manufacturer of various agricultural products, typically doing business under the name “Trufresh.” Among other things, the company sells cantaloupes, melons, tomatoes, peppers, grapes, and squash. In addition to the Trufresh brand, its products are also sold under the Malichita and Rudy brands.
Why Were These Cantaloupes Recalled?
The cantaloupes were recalled after testing revealed that the crop could be contaminated with salmonella, a potentially life-threatening disease. The bacteria that causes salmonella can typically be found in many types of animals, although produce can also be contaminated with it if not adequately cleaned. At least 45 people have been hospitalized as a result of salmonella infections tied to consuming tainted cantaloupes, with two people having apparently died from their illness.
What Are the Dangers of Salmonella?
When people consume food tainted with salmonella, they can become seriously ill, suffering from diarrhea, fever, nausea, chills, headache, and stomach cramps. While this is not necessarily dangerous on its own, the diarrhea can result in dehydration, which can become a serious health problem if not treated. The disease can be especially bad if it infects people with certain pre-existing health issues, however, or if the disease spreads beyond the digestive tract.
What Should You Do?
If you have one of the affected cantaloupes, you should remove it as soon as possible to ensure no one eats it. You should either throw it away or return it, but retain proof of purchase.
