MR. IRA SLAVIT: Unfortunately we see too many newspaper articles or see on the nightly television news tragic stories of high school students at lunch driving to a restaurant or back getting killed or seriously injured in a motor vehicle accident. In fact, there's a great debate in the country as to whether that should be allowed at all and where there should be closed campuses.
What can happen often is the lunch period is really too short to allow the students to go have lunch and to come back, and so everybody is in a hurry, besides from the fact that they're young, inexperienced drivers.
When having that unfortunate circumstance occur, it's very important that the attorney that you use be very experienced because it may be a matter more than just the way the driver was operating the vehicle. It may be responsibility on the part of the school district or possibly on the municipality for a bad road design or defect or maintenance, all of which needs to be looked into.
