MR. IRA SLAVIT: There's been a lot discussion about so-called energy drinks such as Red Bull and the use of these drinks by our young children in high school, junior high school, even in elementary school.
These energy drinks, as opposed to sports drinks, contain caffeine at high levels, sometimes three times as much as coffee and other ingredients such as taurine that can magnify the effects of the caffeine, posing health risks, genuine health risks to children.
In California, in the last year or so, 24 cases have been reported to Poison Control for what has been called the drug of choice among teenagers. It's not only children that are at risk. It's anyone with high blood pressure or heart disease, conditions that can turn into life threatening conditions by the over consumption of these energy drinks. There is simply not sufficient warning being given right now by the manufacturers of these risks to our children and to others.
