MR. IRA SLAVIT: It's also very important at an accident scene to notify the police that an accident has occurred and request that they come to the scene of the accident. When the police come they can document the important information to preserve some of the information so you know whose involved in the accident. The time is very important in a lot of cases the way you need to notify the insurance company for the other party what happened, and the police report will help you do that. Also, when the insurance company is evaluating a claim, having the police come to the accident adds a lot of credibility to your claim. Insurance adjusters sometimes get very skeptical when there's no police report. They get skeptical as to what we're trying to establish and what your version is as to what happened.
