MR. IRA SLAVIT: If you receive a form in the mail or a knock on the door or a telephone phone someone wanting to get information about an accident and you don't know who they are, be careful. Insurance adjusters and investigators are trained to get information from accident victims that they can use in a way favorable to the insurance company. The insurance adjustor and investigator knows what information they're looking for and knows how they may be able to use information that may seem innocent to you or unimportant but can be crucial later on. When you give a statement or information to an investigator, you may not appreciate how the words you're saying can be used by the insurance company later on against you to try to defeat your claim and deny you the justice in compensation that you deserve.
