According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Tesla became the auto manufacturer with the most recalled vehicles in 2024, at around five million total. This continues the company’s worrying safety record, which has included a series of recalls related to both quality control issues as well as software bugs that continue to plague the company’s vehicles. While most such vehicles should be safe to drive, you should stay aware of any recalls that may affect your personal vehicle.

Tesla Recalls Five Million Vehicles in 2024

Approximately five million of Tesla’s vehicles were affected by recalls in 2024, with the company issuing a total of fifteen recalls for the five different models the company sells. These ranged from issues with seat belts and steering assist problems, to issues with the tire pressure sensor. Perhaps most notably, this also included problems with the company’s “Full Self Driving” software, which allows the vehicle to ostensibly drive itself to different locations.

Cybertruck Rollout Leads to Bumpy Ride

The model of Tesla that faced the most issues was its most recent introduction, the Cybertruck, which originally became public in December 2023. Over the past year, the Cybertruck has faced a mountain of complaints about its safety and construction, including design factors like a rigid body and a lack of crumple zones that can make accidents more deadly for passengers. This is in addition to the same software problems that plague other Tesla models.

Continuing Safety Issues at Tesla

Unfortunately, this year is not an aberration in Tesla’s safety record. For the past few years, Tesla has faced increasing scrutiny due to poor quality assurance standards that have led people to deal with defective parts and serious mechanical issues. Worse still, Tesla reportedly knew of many of these issues, but worked to cover them up or blame them on customers to conceal just how many problems they must deal with.

What You Should Do

If you are a Tesla owner yourself, you should make sure to keep up to date with any recalls issued by the company, including bringing your car in for service if necessary. Even if you aren’t a Tesla owner, you should ensure to repair or replace any recalled parts for your vehicle, and make sure to perform regular maintenance. This can limit the chances of a major mechanical problem that could lead to an avoidable accident.
